Cybersecurity Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to step back and review the everyday habits that keep your organisation and personal data safe. Strong security does not always require complex technology; often it comes down to the basics done well.
Build stronger passwords
Use a unique password for every account, and make each one long enough to resist guessing and brute force. Better yet, use a password manager so you never have to reuse or write down credentials.
Turn on multi-factor authentication
Multi-factor authentication adds a vital second layer of protection. Even if a password is stolen, an attacker cannot get in without the additional factor, so enable it on your email, banking and business systems first.
Recognise and report phishing
Phishing is the most common way attacks start. Look out for unsolicited messages that create urgency, ask for credentials, or contain unexpected links and attachments. When in doubt, verify through a known channel and report suspicious messages to your IT team.
Keep everything updated
Software updates fix known vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates on your operating system, browsers and applications, and apply security patches to business systems as soon as they are released.
Secure your devices
Lock your screen when away, use device encryption, and keep your home network protected. As remote working continues, the security of personal devices and home routers matters as much as the office.
Back up, regularly
Regular, tested backups protect you against ransomware, accidental deletion and hardware failure. Store backups offline or offsite, and verify that you can restore from them.
This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, make security a habit rather than an afterthought. If you would like help reviewing your organisation's security posture, the Intellinks East Africa team is here to help.
